TerraSur Geofísica in the media
- September 24, 2026
On Thursday, September 24, El Mercurio’s Innovation section dedicated its front page to five Chilean startups working to boost mining productivity, and TerraSur Geofísica was one of them.
The article starts from a challenging scenario for mining: ore grades are declining, costs are rising, and Chile’s Ministry of Finance fears a “copper recession”. Shallow deposits are being depleted and exploration must go ever deeper, with longer and more expensive campaigns. In this context, the article highlights emerging companies developing solutions to pinpoint where to drill, optimize processes, or recover more ore with the same resources.
That is where our work comes in. Using 3D magnetotelluric modeling, we deliver images of the subsurface at great depths and also quantify their uncertainty. In the article, Nicole Krumm, TerraSur co-founder and CBO, puts it this way: “We look at thousands of possible solutions, so we can say which part is more reliable, supporting companies’ drilling decisions” (translated from Spanish). This matters because a drilling campaign can cost up to US$10 million: knowing which parts of the model are most reliable helps reduce risk before drilling.
We shared the front page with four other startups also contributing to mining: ChucaoTech, Bruna AI, Konatec and NanduX.
We thank Innovación El Mercurio and Fabiola Romo Pino for the article and for highlighting the contribution of Chilean science and technology to mining.
